When I call 911 for a medical emergency, I got a fire truck and/or multiple ambulances. Why?

- In the town of Oak Island, any call to 911 for a medical emergency receives a response from Oak Island Police, Oak Island Fire & Rescue, and Brunswick County EMS. Oak Island Fire & Rescue will respond with either a fire truck or an ambulance based on manpower. Because OIFR functions at the EMT-Intermediate level, and your emergency may require a higher level of care, Brunswick County EMS responds with a paramedic level response.

Are there costs associated with ambulance services?

- Yes. If you are transported to the hospital, the agency transporting you will bill your insurance company for any costs incurred. Regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay, you will receive the same professional and courteous service.
